What does an abandoned application mean?
An abandoned application is no longer moving through the registration process. The reason matters: a missed response, missed use-related filing or incomplete response can require different review. An abandoned application also does not, by itself, establish that a brand is free for someone else to use.
Verify the status before buying a service
Use the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval system, usually called TSDR, to examine the status and documents for the correct serial number. Compare any message you received with the official record. Keep a copy of the notice and your earlier submissions together.
Can the application be revived?
Some situations may qualify for a petition to revive, including certain unintentional missed deadlines. Other circumstances involve different procedures or may require a new application. Eligibility and timing require review of the actual record; paying for a review or filing a petition does not guarantee that the USPTO will grant relief.
Prepare a useful review request
A concise record summary is more useful than a long account of your brand plans. Start with the facts the reviewer can verify. Keep confidential documents out of a general website inquiry.
- Application serial number and proposed mark.
- Official notice and the reason shown for abandonment.
- Notice date and when you first learned of the status.
- Earlier responses, filing receipts and relevant correspondence.
- Your question: review an existing record, discuss next steps, or evaluate a new filing.
Ask what the proposed service actually covers
Before proceeding, ask who reviews the record, which task the quote covers, and whether government charges or further professional work are separate. Ask what happens if the record does not support the route you originally expected. A written scope makes it easier to compare proposals without treating the lowest headline price as the full cost.
Start with your application record
Request an abandonment review from Trademarks Expert using your public serial number and basic status information. The service page explains the intake process. An inquiry does not pause or extend a USPTO deadline; the official record must be checked promptly.

Discuss the next step for your record
Use the matching service page to discuss the information needed, proposed work and separate service and government charges.
Request an Abandonment ReviewGeneral information, not a legal opinion or a determination of your filing deadline. Any legal advice or representation requires a separately confirmed engagement with an appropriately qualified professional.
